It seems like it is that time of year when everyone is sick. Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or paracetamol will provide temporary relief from a sore throat. Whether yours is the result of too much screaming, an early symptom of a cold or the result of working in a dry, centrally heated office, there is an effective way to soothe your sore throat or even prevent it happening in the first place. Drinking a concoction of lemon, honey and warm water may help calm the throat and loosen mucus that may be irritating your airways.

Honey has long been used as a sore-throat remedy. It has antibacterial properties and also acts as a hypertonic osmotic, which means that it draws water out of inflamed tissue. This reduces swelling and discomfort. In addition, its sweetness may stimulate salivation and release mucus in the airways, naturally relieving coughing. Lemon may boost your immune system.

According to one study, children age 2 and older with upper respiratory tract infections were given up to 2 teaspoons (10 milliliters) of honey at bedtime. The honey seemed to reduce nighttime coughing and improve sleep. However, it’s not such a good idea to give honey to children under 1 year of age, because of the risk for infant botulism.

And the NHS officially recommends opting for “a homemade cough remedy containing honey and lemon” instead. “The simplest and cheapest way to treat a short-term cough may be a homemade cough remedy containing honey and lemon. The honey is a demulcent, which means it coats the throat and relieves the irritation that causes coughing.”

According Dr OZ “Honey is known to bolster the immune system. A daily dose of honey can help you to feel energetic and stay healthy. It also has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties; if you do develop a sore or scratchy throat, honey will soothe and help heal. Use it in your tea, coffee, plain hot water or by itself. You can even gargle with honey (and lemon) in salt water when the mixture is at room temperature.”

Honey Lemon Cold Remedy
½ lemon juice
1 pinch of cinnamon
125 ml warm water

  • Squeeze the lemon juice into the warm water...well it should be a little hot but not boiling.
  • Stir in the honey and cinnamon and drink away
  • Drink it on an empty stomach in the morning and before you go to bed at night.

Note
Consult your doctor if you are coughing up green mucus, your cough is accompanied by a fever of over 100 degrees F, you are wheezing, or you are short of breath.
Honey with lemon in hot water may help suppress a cough, but it will not help treat the cause of your illness.
